Scooters Coming and Going

The intersection of Chengde Road and Civil Boulevard is one of Taipei's iconic road-scapes. Civil Boulevard, the surface section, not the overpass (closed to scooters), is the main East-West thoroughfare for scooter traffic in the central part of the city. There aren't many businesses along it, so there are fewer distractions from the right side of the road. It's only two lanes, but it gets you moving in a hurry. Just watch out for the speed cameras.

Chengde is the main road north toward Peitou and especially Tamsui. The North Bus Station is at the foot of this road, and Taipei Main Station looms over the whole neighborhood. As heavy as the traffic looks here, there are probably more people moving directly underground from this location, walking in the shopping malls, riding the MRT, the train, and the High Speed Rail.

When you factor in the buses, taxis, cars, trucks, scooters, motorcycles, and bicycles together with the underground public transit, this intersection might have the most vehicular variety of any place in Taipei.
